As innovation in AI starts to evolve, we have started to see its impact on how we design and build software, our traditional approach is getting outdated week by week and the market is expecting new skillsets to deliver better outcomes.
Once seen as optional and nice to have, leveling up with AI is becoming a must-have and it’s no longer a skill, but a foundational skillset to continue to grow in your career.
In this article I wrote down my observations and skills that will matter in 2026 and beyond.
Products we design now are Context Aware, Memory driven, action-taking and multimodal in nature, most designers are still stuck at static screens, optimizing flows and polishing UI states.
McKinsey reports that less than 50% of candidates meet the AI and digital skills requirements companies are hiring for. At the same time, AI focused roles are growing 3-4x faster than traditional roles.
The gap I see is not just a tool gap but also a thinking and mindset shift gap we are seeing. And when you start working on AI you will see this gap everywhere and traditional approaches soon start to see inefficiency everywhere.

Vibe coding tool is no longer optional
Vibe coding provides designers with a superpower to ideate the design direction, prototype the ideas and reduce the growing gap of design and development. I personally leverage vibe coding a lot, I vibe coded my portfolio, AI design academy, and projects like UX agent, which I won a hackathon by OpenAI, Loveable and AGI Inc. If I just led with static screens, I would never have been able to communicate the vision effectively, now with vibe coding I can go from zero to 1 fast and in an efficient way.
Cross-functional partners, developers and product managers already start to vibe coding, and designers need not be left awkward in between and it’s quite essential to keep up and up skill. Through vibe coding you also help de-risk product decisions, explore ideas without limits and deliver a better outcome.
Designing and building AI Agents
Most go only till passive AI, asking questions and getting answers or mostly generation, but AI agents enable actions for AI so it can automate workflows, improve UX and reduce cognitive load for the users.
Agents now can help plan, take actions and connect to various tools to create systems. Industry data shows AI-related job demand grew 7X between 2023-2025 with agentic and workflow-driven roles leading the surge.
Designers will increasingly be responsible for designing agents personality, goals, designing constraints, system prompts and more.
Understand the foundations
You need not be an AI engineer, but learning how AI works is important, this will help you understand concepts such as context window, hallucinations, latency and data constraints. This will help you to make better product decisions and avoid UX mistakes.
The balance of form and function is quite essential to deliver better outcome, don’t wait to finish the design to thinking about the functional, and cross functional mindset is very essential
Tools matters and outcomes matters even more
Most of tthe hings that I learned about AI is experimenting tools and building AI native products, 2025 has been the rise of thousands of AI tools, but moving forward what’s going to be more available is tool orchestration to drive outcomes, it can be either delivering good experience for the users or driving business outcomes or simply making your life better, this is an important tool to master.
Learn how to design for context, memory and intent
Most of the product design has changed so drastically and rapidly changing how consumer experience products. When you design AI native product these are core areas impacting the product experience.
Multimodal design is the next major shift
AI is no longer text only, and static UI alone will not create meaningful value anymore, designers need to learn how to design for voice, real world environment, camera, audio video and motion, our static design tools are why they are falling short, they don’t enable you to this multiple modality and that’s why it’s important to learn interactive tools. This is one of the reasons I’m excited about the native mobile device, since it allows to leverage these modalities.
Visual craft still matter (More than ever)
The output of AI is no longer generic, after the Gemini model launch we have seen a drastic change in the improved visual outcome even after that it’s still important to focus on taste, because a designers judgment of taste is still very essential and help products with craft as a differentiator.
Design led companies show 32% faster growth, and you have seen this in companies such as Notion, Linear, Mercury etc, and how these companies have been people’s favorite tool for their craft and focus on the details. Good visual drives trust and quality matters to stand out in a crowded market
Communicating through functional prototypes
Unlike before, where we had to stitch each and every screen to create simple prototype, now with AI assisted prototype you can build functional products in matter of days. This has been a leverage in most of the new projects I am working on and working on Hackathon projects, how you can prototype with API etc action as a brain to your product and making your product intelligent. As a designer learning this skill will surely help you standout and it has been a great tool of communication for me personally, that’s why you will see so many demos on my social media and portfolios. One of the hackathons held at AGI House I built an app called Vendo AI, all with the help of AI assisted coding, leveraging API and more.

Final thoughts
In 2026, the best designers won’t be the ones who know most tools, they design intelligent systems, understand context and intent, leverage multimodal interactions, ship outcomes. Designing is no longer about screens, it’s about orchestrating intelligence systems.
